Physiotherapy in Byron Bay

Integrative physiotherapy with Amanda Davis — 20+ years' experience, one-on-one consultations of 60 to 75 minutes, at Suffolk Park five minutes from Byron Bay.

If you are looking for a physiotherapist near Byron Bay, the practical questions are usually the same ones: can they see the whole picture, will you get more than ten minutes and a sheet of exercises, and do they know what to do when the standard approach has already been tried.

Amanda Davis has practised for more than twenty years. Her work is integrative — conventional physiotherapy assessment and hands-on treatment, combined with kinesiology, myofascial stretch therapy, pain reprocessing and functional neuro health. Every consultation is one-on-one and runs 60 to 75 minutes.

What "integrative" actually means here

It does not mean a mixture of therapies chosen at random. It means the assessment looks at the whole person rather than the sore part: how the nervous system is regulating, how you are breathing, how you are sleeping, what your history is, and what your body is prioritising.

Those factors change what treatment should be. Two people can present with identical low back pain and need quite different things — one needs mechanical treatment and load progression, the other needs the nervous system to come out of a threat response before anything will hold. Treating both the same way is how people end up with temporary relief followed by the same problem returning.

More on the approach is on the integrative physiotherapy page.

What people come here for

Amanda's areas of particular focus — the ones where her combination of skills is most useful — are:

Alongside those, standard physiotherapy for neck and back pain, shoulder and hip problems, sporting injuries and post-surgical rehabilitation.

What a first appointment involves

The initial consultation is 75 minutes. It includes a detailed history, a physical examination, treatment on the day, and a clear explanation of what is driving the problem and what the plan is. You leave with a small number of specific things to do at home — not a long list.

Standard follow-up consultations are 60 minutes. Loose, comfortable clothing is useful; for lower-body problems, shorts.

Fees and health fund rebates

Initial appointment $195 (75 minutes). Standard appointment $185 (60 minutes). The clinic is connected to HICAPS, so private health fund rebates can be claimed on the spot and you pay only the gap. Medicare rebates are available with a current GP care plan referral. Full details are on the treatments and fees page.

Getting here from Byron Bay

The clinic is at 18 Armstrong Street, Suffolk Park NSW 2481 — roughly five minutes south of Byron Bay, and straightforward from Broken Head, Lennox Head and the southern beaches. There is parking at the door. Appointments run Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm. Online sessions by video are available for people outside the region.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist?

No. Physiotherapists are primary care practitioners in Australia, so you can book directly. A GP referral is only needed if you are claiming a Medicare rebate under a care plan, or if your insurer requires one.

How long are the appointments?

75 minutes for the initial consultation and 60 minutes for follow-ups — considerably longer than the 20 to 30 minutes typical of many clinics. It is one-on-one for the whole appointment, not shared with another patient or handed to an assistant.

How far is Suffolk Park from Byron Bay?

About five minutes by car. Suffolk Park is the first suburb south of Byron Bay on the coast road, and the clinic is on Armstrong Street with parking at the door.

Can I claim on my private health fund?

Yes. The clinic uses HICAPS, so you claim on the spot and pay only the difference between the fee and your rebate. The rebate amount depends on your fund and level of cover — worth checking with your fund beforehand if you want an exact figure.

What if I'm not sure physiotherapy is the right thing for my problem?

Call and describe it. If physiotherapy is unlikely to help, Amanda will say so rather than book you in — and if something needs medical investigation first, that is the more sensible starting point.
